Perfume oil vs. eau de parfum
A perfume oil sits close and slow. An eau de parfum lifts off the skin and carries across a room. Most of the difference comes down to one thing: how much aromatic material is dissolved, and what it is dissolved in.
An eau de parfum carries roughly fifteen to twenty percent aromatic compounds dissolved in alcohol, so it projects on application and then settles. A perfume oil carries those same compounds in a carrier oil instead of alcohol, so it stays close to the skin and releases more slowly. Neither is automatically stronger or longer-lasting. Concentration shapes how a scent wears; the carrier shapes how far it travels.
What concentration actually measures
Concentration is the percentage of aromatic compounds dissolved in a solvent. The fragrance “types” you read on a bottle, extrait, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, are defined by exactly that ratio of perfume oil to carrier, which in fine fragrance is almost always alcohol or an alcohol-and-water mix. Everything else, the names, the price, the longevity claims, follows from that one ratio and from what the carrier does once it meets warm skin.
So the label is shorthand for a band of that ratio, not a brand and not a measure of quality. Higher up the ladder means more aromatic material in the bottle. It does not, on its own, mean better. A thoughtfully built eau de toilette can outlast a thin extrait; the materials matter as much as the maths.

A note on the numbers. These percentage ranges are widely cited industry conventions, not legal standards. No regulation forces a house to put a given percentage behind a given name, and the bands overlap, so one house’s eau de parfum can be richer than another’s. The same fragrance is sometimes sold in more than one concentration. Treat the ladder as a map of intent, not a guarantee.
Why the same scent smells different in oil versus spray
The carrier is doing quiet work. Alcohol is volatile, evaporating at around 78 degrees Celsius, so it flashes off the skin within moments and throws the lighter top notes outward as it goes. That first bright lift, the projection you notice when someone walks past, is largely the alcohol carrying the fragrance into the air. As it evaporates, the scent draws back toward the skin and the heart and base notes take over.
An oil carrier has no such flash. Oils are far less volatile, so an oil-based fragrance releases its aroma slowly and clings close to the body. The result reads as more intimate, a scent someone meets when they are near you rather than across the room. This is the reasonable mechanism behind the idea that oils “last longer”, though it is closer to the truth to say they wear quietly. How long either one truly lasts depends on the formulation, the materials, and your own skin chemistry, not on the carrier alone.

Does higher concentration mean it lasts longer
Generally, more aromatic material gives a scent more to draw on, so it tends to linger. But longevity depends on which materials are in the formula, not only how much. Base notes, the woods, resins and musks, cling to skin for hours; top notes, the citruses and bright greens, are gone quickly whatever the concentration. A high-extrait built mostly on volatile top notes can fade faster than a modest eau de parfum anchored in base notes.
Skin matters too. Fragrance molecules bind to the lipids on your skin, so moisturised or oilier skin tends to hold a scent longer than dry skin, where more of it simply evaporates. This is also the honest counter to the “oils always win” claim: when an oil and a spray share the same concentration and sit on well-moisturised skin, the gap in longevity narrows. Much of the reputation comes from oils being formulated more concentrated in the first place, and from slower evaporation, not from anything magical about the carrier.

If you want something close, slow and private, a scent worn for the person standing beside you, build it from body care on warm skin, or layer the two: cream first, spray over the pulse points where body heat helps it diffuse.
Price tends to climb with concentration, since there is more aromatic material in the bottle, but it is not a reliable measure of quality. A well-composed eau de toilette can outwear an indifferent extrait.
